Teeth Whitening

Tooth whitening is an effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth through chemical agents that remove stain producing chromogens. It helps lightening the existing colour and the removal of stains in itself creates a marked difference. Enamel is the surface layer of the tooth that gives colour, shine and protection to your teeth. With time and due to factors like increased consumption of acidic foods, smoking and chewing of tobacco, enamel loses its original texture and sheen. Teeth whitening is a quick, trouble-free procedure that brightens your lost smile causing minimal damage to the tooth surface.

What stops you from shining!

Your care

The Procedure

Close examination and thorough cleaning is performed prior to the teeth whitening process. The lips are extended with retractors and the gums are safe-guarded from any kind of irritation, that could be caused by the bleaching agent by using a protective rubber dam or a hardening gel. Deep teeth bleaching process may also be a combination of treatments not only to reduce the level of discolouration but also to make the teeth more permeable to oxygen.

Your care

Custom-made tray bleaching

Tray bleaching is a customized kit with whitening peroxide-based gel and custom-designed trays that fit your mouth. A detailed impression of your teeth and gum-line is used to fabricate trays that exactly fit in the mouth. The teeth whitening process gets activated when this gel is applied on the tailor-made tray and is used over the teeth for a period of 20 minutes. This procedure is performed in the clinics and also in some cases asked to be continued at home. Repeated use of this bleaching process show results as early as in 3 to 5 days into the treatment and you can see a marked change in the teeth colour in the next two weeks’ time.

Whitening Strips

Flexible polyethylene strips which are layered with hydrogen peroxide are one of the methods used for the teeth whitening.  These strips when applied onto the teeth and gently pressed, provide a contact and the whitening process is activated. These are suggested to be used as per the advice of the dental specialist only as they may cause serious damage to the soft tissues if left in prolonged contact. The effectiveness and the duration of the treatment would depend on the extent of teeth discolouration.

Laser Bleaching

Professional bleaching is the most preferred method for teeth whitening as it is safe when carried out by you specialist and comes with a complete pre-examination and oral cleaning. The laser whitening process is the fastest technique, taking less than hour of your time. The procedure involves application of the whitening agent over the pre-cleaned teeth and through the laser light activator, the stain is treated to be removed.

More on teeth whitening

Dental stains can be caused due to smoking, tobacco use and excess intake of acidic drinks like tea, coffee, cola and poor oral hygiene. Intrinsic staining can also occur due to fluorosis, tooth trauma and other oral health conditions. Tooth colour is also bound to change with age.

Whitening kits, whitening strips, over-the counter products like whitening tooth pastes are available. However, these kits if not used carefully can damage your teeth and gums. As it also is a complex procedure, it is advisable to get it done professionally for a safe and long-lasting result.

The effect of teeth whitening may last up to three years but would vary with each person. You could reduce its longevity if you have habits of smoking or have foods like tea, caffeine and others that may add to the staining process.

Teeth whitening is not advisable for pregnant and lactating women. Also children under the age of six years are said to avoid going for this treatment. Most bleaching agents cause post treatment sensitivity and hence if you are already suffering from sensitivity or teeth attrition, your condition may worsen. Whitening agents can only lighten stains but heavy stains with mottled teeth may be better corrected with cosmetic restorations.

Teeth whitening is a procedure that helps improve the natural shade of your teeth. Hence this may not work on artificial prosthesis such as dentures and crowns.
