Cosmetic Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and Onlays are a dental restorative solution that helps avoid further decay or deterioration of damaged teeth. They are custom-made in the lab to fit perfectly into the cavity/damage, supporting the original tooth structure. As inlays and onlays have this combined benefit of providing excellent functional longevity and cosmetic naturalness, they are highly preferred restorative dental procedures.

Inlays and onlays are preferably used for mild to moderate tooth decay where there isn’t enough tooth structure to opt for a regular dental filling. Designed to be precise in shape and size, and with only minimal pre-treatment preparation required, these are also easy to clean and maintain.

The Procedure

Inlays and onlays are characterised by the precision of the placement and a fine judgement is required to decide where and which area of the teeth they should be used on. The tooth damage or decay is removed, following which, a perfect tooth impression taken for the final structure and the cavity is treated with a temporary onlay/ inlay in the first visit. Based on this mould, a perfectly fitting inlay/onlay is fabricated. In the second visit, the temporary inlay/onlay is removed and this pre-modelled part is fitted in the affected area, smoothened and polished securing a comfortable bite.

Our specialist will discuss with you to help choose the best material for you, that would satisfy  the functionality, longevity and the expected appeal.

Inlays

An inlay is used when the cavity is too large for a dental filling. Pre-modelled based on a tooth impression, inlays cover the area within the cusps of a premolar or a molar (back) tooth.

Onlays

Onlays are pre-modelled single piece restorations which cover one or more cusps of the tooth and extend to the biting area. Unlike crowns which cover the entire tooth area, onlays preserve and support most of the natural part of the tooth that requires restoration.

Metal (Gold)

Although aesthetically not appealing, gold is preferred to be one of the best materials for its compatibility and durability. Metal inlays using gold or other alloys are used on the molars for their functional stability. However metals are less preferred for their lack of cosmetic appeal.

Porcelain

Porcelain material perfectly matches tooth colour and satisfies your cosmetic need, giving you a complete natural look. This material is highly preferred when the damaged teeth falls under the ‘smile line’ area

Composite (Resins)

Composite resins including glass-like materials that are similar to tooth colour are aesthetically appealing. Resin materials are a good option for people who have issues of misaligned bite or a habit of teeth grinding.

More on Onlays & Inlays

Usage of materials mainly depends on the effected tooth area, extent of decay and also the functionality expected. Our team at ClinicGP would be the ideal people to discuss and suggest the most appropriate option for you.

Cosmetic dental fillings are restorative material used directly on the teeth after the decay is treated, whereas inlays/onlays are pre-modelled restorations custom-fitted to the damaged teeth covering the cavity.

Crowns are expensive alternatives to onlays. Also onlays help keep the major part of your healthy tooth intact. When the tooth decay or injury is not very severe and you still have the tooth structure to support, an onlay is preferred.

The treatment procedure is carried out using local anaesthesia, thereby numbing the area. You will be aware of what your doctor is doing during the procedure but it will be relatively painless.

Dental inlays and onlays are one of the safest procedures that preserve the beauty of your smile with minimal handling done to the healthy part of your tooth. Thus it assures strength and longevity.

Most of these restorations are long lasting, ranging from a minimum of 10 years to 20 years. It also equally depends on the oral health maintained and vary with every individual’s overall dental condition.
